EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Gustave Moreau's masterpiece, "Oedipus Sphinx" painted in 1864. Measuring an impressive 81 1/4 x 41 1/4 inches (2064 x 1048 cm), this oil canvas painting is a true testament to Moreau's artistic prowess during his mid-career. The artwork was prominently displayed at the Salon and depicts the iconic Greek hero Oedipus confronting the enigmatic Sphinx outside the city of Thebes. In order to save himself and the besieged Thebans, Oedipus must solve the riddle posed by this mythical creature. Moreau masterfully captures this intense moment as Oedipus stands before the imposing Sphinx, their gazes locked in a battle of wits. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring life to both characters, highlighting their individual strength and determination. As one of France's most celebrated painters from Paris, Gustave Moreau expertly conveys not only the physicality but also the psychological depth of these legendary figures. This painting serves as a powerful reminder of humanity's eternal struggle against fate and our constant quest for knowledge. With its rich symbolism and timeless subject matter, "Oedipus Sphinx" continues to captivate viewers even today. It is a remarkable piece that exemplifies Moreau's exceptional talent in creating thought-provoking artworks that transcend time and place.
