EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the ancient island of Samos, where history and mythology intertwine. The map showcases the homeland of two influential figures: Polycrates, the ruler, and Pythagoras, the renowned philosopher. As we gaze upon this copperplate print by Petrus Schenk, we are transported to a world that is both familiar and distant. The intricate details on this map offer a glimpse into how Samos appeared during its occupation under Turkish rule. It is based on Joseph Georgirenes' description, who was not only an archbishop but also an expert on Samian history. This London edition provides a valuable historical document that allows us to understand how the island was inhabited centuries ago. Samos holds great significance as it was not only known for its political power under Polycrates but also as the birthplace of Pythagoras - one of history's most celebrated mathematicians and philosophers. This map serves as a tribute to their legacies and reminds us of their lasting impact on our understanding of science and philosophy. As we admire this print from Liszt Collection, let us appreciate the artistry involved in creating such a detailed representation of Samos. It invites us to explore its rich past while acknowledging its present reality under Turkish dominion. May this image inspire curiosity about ancient civilizations and remind us that even amidst change, traces of our collective heritage endure through maps like these.
