EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Lodging Pilgrims 1635 Etching engraving Sheet" from the Liszt Collection takes us back in time to the year 1635. The image showcases an exquisite etching and engraving sheet that has been meticulously trimmed to measure approximately 10 1/4 by 12 7/16 inches, or about 26 by 31.6 centimeters. The artwork itself was created by Abraham Bosse, a renowned French artist born in Tours between the years of 1602 and 1604, who later settled in Paris until his passing in 1676. Bosse's attention to detail is evident as he masterfully captures a scene depicting pilgrims seeking lodging during their spiritual journey. The composition exudes a sense of tranquility as weary travelers find solace within these humble lodgings. Each figure is intricately portrayed with delicate lines and shading, showcasing Bosse's exceptional skill as an etcher and engraver. Through this evocative piece, we are transported back to the early seventeenth century, gaining insight into the lives of pilgrims during this era. The print serves not only as a visual delight but also as a historical artifact that allows us to appreciate both the artistic talent of Abraham Bosse and gain deeper understanding into societal customs at that time.
