EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a mesmerizing scene from Greek mythology. In the artwork titled "Jupiter Disguised Shepherd Seducing Mnemosyn" we witness the powerful god Jupiter, disguised as a humble shepherd, engaging in an enchanting encounter with Mnemosyn, the Goddess of Memory. Painted by Jacob de Wit in 1727, this masterpiece was commissioned by Jan Baptist de Surmont for his house in Loenen aan de Vecht. The composition is set against a picturesque landscape where Jupiter skillfully conceals his true identity to court Mnemosyn. A majestic eagle, symbolizing Jupiter's presence and power, soars above them. On the left side of the painting, adorable putti accompany a herd of sheep, adding an element of innocence and charm to the scene. Mnemosyn holds great significance as she is not only a Titaness but also the mother of the Muses – nine goddesses who inspire creativity and artistic expression. This portrayal beautifully intertwines mythology with artistry. The large canvas size allows us to immerse ourselves fully into this mythical world created by Jacob de Wit's skilled brushstrokes and vibrant oil paints. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece from Liszt Collection, we are transported back in time to witness one of Jupiter's clandestine encounters with a divine being – an exquisite moment frozen forever on canvas.
