EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing interior of a Protestant Gothic church adorned with motifs from both the Old and New Church in Amsterdam. The viewer is transported into the aisle, where an intriguing scene unfolds before their eyes. A man engages in conversation with a grave digger, perhaps discussing matters of life and death or seeking solace within these hallowed walls. Amidst this solemn exchange, two playful dogs frolic near an opened grave, adding an unexpected touch of liveliness to the otherwise somber atmosphere. Their presence serves as a reminder that even in moments of grief and contemplation, life's joys can still be found. Emanuel de Witte masterfully captured this scene on canvas using oil paint, skillfully bringing to life every intricate detail. The dimensions of the artwork (122 cm height x 104 cm width x 7.5 cm depth) highlight its substantial size and commanding presence. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece from the Liszt Collection, we are invited to reflect on our own mortality while marveling at the beauty that can be found within religious spaces. This print evokes a sense of reverence and curiosity as it transports us back in time to experience firsthand the rich history contained within these sacred walls.
