EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "Fruit Seller, The fruit saleswoman" we are transported back in time to witness a young woman's bustling store. Standing confidently behind the counter, she meticulously weighs a bunch of grapes using an old-fashioned scale. To her left, a basket brimming with fresh apples adds vibrant color to the scene. As our gaze wanders beyond the central figure, we notice shelves filled with an assortment of baskets, pots, and pans neatly arranged in the background. These items hint at the diverse offerings available in this charming store. However, it is impossible not to be intrigued by the unexpected sight hanging beside the window – a lifeless hare. This peculiar addition adds an element of curiosity and intrigue to an otherwise ordinary setting. The artist responsible for capturing this slice of everyday life is Henrietta Christina Temminck between 1840 and 1860. Through her masterful use of oil paint on panel, she skillfully brings depth and texture to each element within this composition. This remarkable print from Liszt Collection allows us to appreciate both the artistic talent involved in creating such scenes as well as offering us a glimpse into historical trade practices. It serves as a reminder that even seemingly mundane moments can hold great beauty when viewed through an artist's lens.
