EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection titled "Flagellation Pilate stand under archway left watching two men flagellate figure" transports us back to a significant moment in history. The image depicts a scene of intense emotion and religious significance, beautifully captured by Artokoloro. In this engraving, we witness Pilate standing beneath an imposing archway, his gaze fixed upon two men who are mercilessly flagellating a bound figure. This central figure is none other than Christ himself, tied to a column as he endures unimaginable suffering. The composition evokes both empathy and awe as we contemplate the profound sacrifice depicted before us. Created between 1500 and 1534, this second state engraving showcases the masterful technique of Marcantonio Raimondi, an Italian artist hailing from Bologna. Influenced by Albrecht Dürer's work from Nuremberg, Raimondi skillfully captures every intricate detail with precision and finesse. The dimensions of the sheet measure approximately 5 1/8 x 13 inches (13 x 33 cm), making it an ideal size for display or study. As we explore this remarkable piece further, we are reminded of its historical value and artistic excellence that continues to captivate audiences today.
