EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection showcases a remarkable artwork titled "Entombment Christ two men lifting Christ tomb" by Artokoloro. The image captures a poignant moment of the entombment of Jesus Christ, with two men carefully lifting his tomb. The composition is rich in detail, revealing a shroud underneath the body and three crosses in the background symbolizing Golgotha. This piece belongs to a series of five engravings that unfortunately were destroyed over time, making this print even more valuable. Created by Giovanni Antonio da Pordenone, an esteemed Italian artist known for his detached frescoes, this engraving was completed around 1656 in Venice's cloister of Sstefano. Measuring approximately 6 1/4 x 7 1/8 inches (159 x 181 cm), it beautifully captures the emotional intensity and religious significance of this biblical event. Giacomo Piccini, an Italian artist born in Venice in 1617, skillfully reproduced this masterpiece after Giovanni de Sacchis' original work from Ferrara dating back to 1532-33. The attention to detail and precision evident in Piccini's engraving truly brings out the essence of Pordenone's vision. This print serves as a testament to both artistic mastery and historical preservation. It allows us to appreciate and reflect upon one of Christianity's most profound moments while honoring the talent and dedication behind its creation.
