EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print from the Liszt Collection takes us back to a significant event in agricultural history. The image showcases the meeting of the Royal Agricultural Society at Salisbury, where two remarkable animals stole the show. In this engraving dating back to 1857, we are introduced to Mr. James Davy on the left and Mr. Edward Pope on the right. On the left side stands Mr. Davy with his pride and joy, Devons No. 176 - a magnificent First Prize Bull named '30'. This powerful creature exudes strength and nobility, representing excellence in its breed. Standing beside him is Mr. Pope with his equally impressive First Prize Heifer named '15', identified as No. 201. The scene captures not only these prized animals but also highlights an important moment for agriculture enthusiasts during Victorian times when livestock breeding was highly regarded as a symbol of progress and prosperity. Through this engraved image, we catch a glimpse of history's illustrative technique that beautifully depicts every intricate detail of these award-winning creatures while evoking nostalgia for retro styled art forms. As we admire this historical snapshot frozen in time, it reminds us of our connection to nature's wonders and serves as a tribute to those who have dedicated their lives to advancing agricultural practices throughout generations past.
