EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "Donkey near a cistern" we are transported back in time to witness a scene of everyday life in the 17th century. The image, captured by Quint Lox from the Liszt Collection, showcases the collaborative work of Jan de Visscher and Nicolaes Pietersz. Berchem. The focal point of the photograph is undoubtedly the donkey standing near a utilitarian cistern. This humble creature symbolizes resilience and hard work, as it was commonly used for carrying heavy loads during that era. The presence of a dog nearby adds an element of companionship and loyalty to this rustic setting. A man can be seen tending to the public pump water fountain connected to the tank or cistern. His role highlights how essential access to clean water was for daily life in those times. It serves as a reminder of our dependence on such basic resources even today. Jan de Visscher and Nicolaes Pietersz. Berchem's collaboration brings forth their artistic prowess through their attention to detail and composition within this snapshot from history. Their ability to capture not only physical elements but also emotions makes this artwork truly remarkable. As we gaze upon this photo print, we are reminded of our connection with past generations who relied on simple yet vital elements like water sources and animals for survival. Quint Lox has expertly preserved this moment in time, allowing us to appreciate both its historical significance and aesthetic beauty.
