EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection showcases a stunning costume design sketch from the 18th century. The sketch features a large bonnet-style hat adorned with feathers, flowers, and ribbons, meticulously outlined in black ink and partly touched with red crayon. The exquisite details of this hat make it an extraordinary piece of art. Three charming children are also depicted in the sketch, adding a touch of innocence and playfulness to the composition. Their presence brings life to the artwork as they seem to be wearing costumes that perfectly complement the extravagant hat. The artist's skillful use of graphite and gouache creates depth and texture on this sheet measuring 6 11/16 x 9 15/16 inches (17 x 25.3 cm). Although anonymous, it is believed that this French artwork may be connected to Antoine Caire Morand, a renowned figure in costume design during that era. The vibrant colors used in this sketch, such as salmon-colored watercolor for some elements, further enhance its visual appeal. This remarkable piece transports us back in time to an era where fashion was not only about clothing but also about expressing oneself through elaborate accessories like hats. Whether you are an art enthusiast or simply appreciate historical craftsmanship, this print offers a glimpse into the world of costume design during the late 18th century. It serves as a testament to both artistic talent and cultural significance within fashion history.
