EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection showcases an exquisite engraving titled "Conversion St Paul 1576" by Cornelis Cort. The Netherlandish artist, born in Hoorn ca, between 1533 and 1578, beautifully captures a pivotal moment in history through his intricate craftsmanship. The engraving depicts the dramatic conversion of St. Paul, one of Christianity's most influential figures. With meticulous attention to detail and masterful use of shading and line work, Cort brings this transformative event to life on paper. Inspired by Giulio Clovio's original artwork from Rome, the Italian influence is evident in every stroke. The composition exudes a sense of divine intervention as St. Paul kneels before a radiant light that illuminates his face with awe-inspiring clarity. His outstretched arms convey surrender and humility while emphasizing the profound spiritual experience he undergoes. Cort's skillful rendering not only captures the essence of this biblical narrative but also serves as a testament to his own artistic prowess during the late Renaissance period. This print transports viewers back in time to witness an extraordinary moment that forever changed both religious history and art itself. As part of the Liszt Collection, this remarkable piece offers art enthusiasts an opportunity to appreciate Cornelis Cort's contribution to Netherlandish artistry while celebrating centuries-old traditions preserved through engravings like these.
