EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection takes us back in time to Belle Plain, Virginia, in the year 1864. The image showcases the Lower Wharf of this historic town, frozen in a moment captured by talented photographers Timothy H. O'Sullivan and James Gardner. The albumen silver print technique used here adds a touch of elegance to the photograph, enhancing its timeless appeal. The delicate details and rich tonal range are beautifully preserved on this glass negative. Timothy H. O'Sullivan, an Irish-born American photographer known for his contributions to Civil War documentation, brings his expertise behind the lens to create this remarkable piece of art. His keen eye for composition and ability to capture raw emotions truly shine through. James Gardner, born in 1832 and sharing O'Sullivan's passion for photography, collaborates with him on this project. Together they immortalize Belle Plain's Lower Wharf during a pivotal period in American history. As we gaze upon this print today, we are transported back to that era when bustling activity filled these very streets - soldiers marching off to war or returning home weary but victorious; merchants tending their shops; families bidding farewell or eagerly awaiting loved ones' return. This print is not just a visual representation but also a gateway into our past – reminding us of where we came from and how far we have come as a nation since those turbulent times.
