EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection showcases a unique blend of artistry and history. The central focus is a child portrait, exquisitely surrounded by a delicate floral frame. What makes this piece truly intriguing is the incorporation of banknote motifs within the artwork. Created between 1824 and 1837, this engraving and etching on sheet measures approximately 3 1/16 x 1 1/2 inches (78 x 38 cm). It is attributed to Asher Brown Durand, an American artist hailing from Jefferson, New Jersey (1796-1886), who was associated with Cyrus (1787-1868). The juxtaposition of the innocent child's face against the intricate details of currency adds layers of symbolism to this composition. Perhaps it serves as a commentary on wealth or power in society during that period. Durand's mastery shines through in his ability to seamlessly merge different artistic elements into one cohesive piece. The use of maplewood as his medium further enhances the overall aesthetic appeal. As we gaze upon this remarkable print, we are transported back in time to an era when craftsmanship and creativity were highly valued. This artwork not only captures our attention but also invites us to ponder its deeper meaning – reminding us that art has always been a powerful tool for expression throughout history.
