EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an exquisite engraving from the 16th century, titled "Astronomy Astronomie". The image, expertly captured by Artokoloro, transports us back in time to a period of great scientific curiosity and exploration. Measuring at 2 3/4 x 2 1/16 inches (7.53 cm), this delicate artwork was created by Etienne Delaune, a talented French artist hailing from Orleans (1518-19–1583) but later settling in Strasbourg. The intricacy of the engraving is truly remarkable; it depicts various celestial objects and instruments used for astronomical observations during that era. Each line and detail has been meticulously etched onto the surface, showcasing Delaune's exceptional skill as an engraver. The composition exudes a sense of wonder and fascination with the cosmos, capturing the spirit of Renaissance science. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing piece, we are reminded of humanity's eternal quest for knowledge and understanding of our place in the universe. It serves as a testament to the rich history of astronomy and its profound impact on human civilization. Acquired by The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Liszt Collection, this print allows us to appreciate this rare masterpiece even if we cannot witness it firsthand. Its presence adds depth to any space while serving as a constant reminder that art can transcend time itself.
