The painted surface itself spans about 34 x 11 inches (864 x279 cm), while the right side measures three-quarters at roughly 87 6/30 x1/8 inches (283 cm). Gerard David, a renowned Netherlandish painter born in Oudewater around1455 and active in Bruges until his death in1523, crafted this masterpiece during his early years as an artist. Trained under unknown mentors, David's works were heavily influenced by Northern Netherlandish art and rooted in the style of Hugo van der Goes and Dieric Bouts.
