EDITORS COMMENTS
England, Tyne & Wear, Wideopen. This print by Jason Friend Photography takes us back in time to the rich history of the Tyneside Waggonways. Dating back to the 17th century, these ancient pathways were once bustling with activity as they served as vital transportation routes for coal from the collieries to the Tyne. The image beautifully captures the essence of this historical site in all its glory. The rugged landscape and remnants of old railway tracks tell a story of industry and perseverance that shaped this northern county. As we gaze upon this print, we can almost hear the echoes of wagons rumbling along these paths, carrying precious cargo that fueled England's growth during those times. Friend's keen eye for detail allows us to appreciate not only the physicality of these waggonways but also their significance in shaping local communities and economies. While commercial use is not explicitly mentioned here, it is clear that these waggonways played a crucial role in connecting collieries with transport hubs like Tyne. This print serves as a powerful reminder of our past and invites us to reflect on how far we have come since then.
