EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a glimpse of the bustling King Street in Ramsgate, Thanet, Kent, after 1945. The focal point of this street view is the magnificent St Paul's Church, which was erected in 1873 with the aim of attracting more people from King Street to attend church services. Standing tall and proud, this Victorian-era church served as a beacon of faith for the community. However, fate had different plans for St Paul's Church. In 1940, it was forced to close its doors due to unforeseen circumstances. Sadly, between January and February 1959, this architectural gem met its demise when it was demolished. Today, only remnants of its apsidal east end can be seen through the lower section of the exterior wall that has survived over time. As we gaze upon this poignant image captured by John Pennycuick for Historic England, we are reminded not only of the lost grandeur and religious significance that once graced King Street but also how communities evolve and change throughout history. This photograph serves as a testament to both our fascination with preserving heritage and acknowledging progress within our towns and cities.
