EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1883 by Henry Taunt, showcases the picturesque Workman Bridge in Evesham, Worcestershire. The bridge, built in 1866, serves as a gateway into the charming town from Bengeworth. The River Avon flows gently beneath the bridge, reflecting the elegant architecture of the structure. In the background, the 16th century bell tower of Evesham Abbey stands proudly, a testament to the rich history of the area. The abbey, founded in 1204, was once one of the most important religious houses in England, attracting pilgrims from far and wide. The Victorian era, during which this photograph was taken, was a time of great change and progress in England. The bridge, with its modern design, exemplifies the engineering advances of the period. Yet, despite the new construction, the abbey tower remains a constant reminder of the town's deep-rooted history. The peaceful scene presented in this photograph invites the viewer to imagine the hustle and bustle of daily life in Evesham during the late 19th century. The bridge, the river, and the abbey tower all come together to create a stunning tableau of history and tranquility.
