EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a slice of history frozen in time. Taken by the talented photographer John Gay in 1974, it showcases the intricate details of a handrail on the communal stairs at Daren Court, located on Carleton Road in Holloway, London. The multistorey block of flats stands tall as a witness to decades gone by. In this particular shot, Gay's keen eye for detail is evident as he focuses on the handrail with utmost precision. The craftsmanship and design of this seemingly mundane element are brought to life through his lens. Every curve and contour tells its own story - a testament to both functionality and aesthetics. The monochromatic palette adds an air of nostalgia, transporting us back to an era when such architectural features were celebrated for their elegance and practicality. As we gaze upon this image today, we can't help but appreciate the beauty found within everyday objects that often go unnoticed. Thanks to Historic England's preservation efforts, we have access to these remarkable visual records that document our built heritage. This photograph serves as a reminder that even small fragments from our past hold immense value in understanding our collective history.
