EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the scene at Shoreham Harbour in West Sussex during the early 20th century. The image, taken by Edward John Bedford between 1905 and 1925, showcases the hard work and traditional methods used in the maritime industry at the time. Two horse-drawn ballast carts are seen wading in the shallow waters of the harbour, just beside the slipway of Stow and Son Yacht Builders. The horses, harnessed and determined, pull the heavy carts through the water, their hooves barely touching the ground as they make their way towards the shore. The carts are filled with small stones or gravel, which were essential for balancing the weight of ships and improving their stability. The scene is a testament to the physical labour required to maintain the harbour and keep the boats afloat. The horses, their coats glistening with water, work tirelessly, their breath visible in the cool air. In the background, the Stow and Son Yacht Builders' slipway is visible, with boats and other structures lining the shore. The photograph offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the importance of horses in the maritime industry and the daily work that went into maintaining the harbour. The calm waters, the horses, and the traditional methods all combine to create a tranquil and timeless image that transports us back to a bygone era.
