EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial photograph, EAW017029 from the Historic England Archive, offers a breathtaking view of Southend Pier and the Prince George Extension in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, England, as seen from the south. The pier, a popular tourist attraction and the longest in the world at the time, stretches out into the North Sea, its wooden structure contrasting against the tranquil blue waters. At the pier's end, docked, is the New Medway Steam Packet Company's (NMSPCo) PS "Queen of Thanet." A former minesweeper named HMS Melton during World War I, this historic ship was acquired by NMSPCo in 1928 and entered service in 1929. Its distinctive red funnel and white hull can be clearly seen in the image. The "Queen of Thanet" played a significant role in the company's maritime history, providing essential passenger and freight services between the Thames Estuary and various ports. The photograph was taken by Aerofilms Ltd in July 1948, capturing a moment in time when the pier and the "Queen of Thanet" stood proudly against the backdrop of the North Sea. The image is a testament to the rich maritime heritage of Southend-on-Sea and the enduring appeal of its iconic pier and historic vessels.
