EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the essence of Phillip King's iconic sculpture, "Dunstable Reel" located at Countesthorpe College in Leicestershire. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of this painted steel masterpiece are beautifully showcased through Steven Baker's lens. "Dunstable Reel" was created by King in 1970, during a post-war era that sought to redefine artistic expression. This sculpture stands as a testament to the artist's innovative approach, blending geometric shapes with organic forms to create a visually striking composition. In this particular shot, Baker focuses on a close-up view of the sculpture, allowing us to appreciate its intricate details and textures. The play between light and shadow adds depth and dimensionality to the artwork, enhancing its overall impact. The juxtaposition of bold primary colors against the surrounding greenery creates an intriguing contrast that draws our attention even further. It is evident that King intended for his creation to interact harmoniously with its environment while simultaneously commanding attention. Through this photograph, we can truly appreciate both King's artistic vision and Baker's skillful eye for capturing it. It serves as a reminder of the enduring power of art to inspire and provoke thought long after its creation.
