EDITORS COMMENTS
This print by Dave MacLeod transports us back in time to the forgotten village of Ulnaby, nestled in Darlington's picturesque landscape. The image captures the earthwork remains of this medieval settlement, offering a glimpse into its rich history and mysterious past. The aerial perspective reveals intricate ridge and furrow patterns etched into the land, evidence of centuries-old farming practices that once sustained this community. As we gaze upon these ancient markings, our imagination runs wild with stories of hardworking villagers tending to their crops and livestock. Yet, despite its former vibrancy, Ulnaby now stands deserted. The remnants of stone walls and foundations are all that remain as silent witnesses to a once-thriving village life. Nature has slowly reclaimed what was once human territory; grasses sway gently in the breeze where houses once stood proudly. MacLeod's expert composition allows us to appreciate both the beauty and melancholy inherent in these abandoned ruins. The soft light filtering through clouds casts an ethereal glow over the scene, evoking a sense of nostalgia for times long gone. As we contemplate this mesmerizing photograph, let us remember those who came before us - their hopes, dreams, joys, and sorrows forever imprinted on this hallowed ground. Historic England preserves such treasures so that future generations may connect with our shared heritage and be inspired by the resilience of those who have walked these paths before us.
