Waterlow Park, Highgate, c1950. Creator: Shirley Markham
Waterlow Park, Highgate, c1950. People sitting on park benches in north London. Shirley Markham (1931-1999) studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London from 1950-1952. The writer, artist, poet, and illustrator Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) was one of her tutors, and her style of drawing was also influenced by other British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake and Edward Bawden. Markham spent time in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, and also visited Rome, sketching classical buildings. After graduating from Central, she worked as a graphic designer, producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus and programmes. She gave up her promising career however when she got married in 1957. Middle-class women at that time were expected to devote their energies to bringing up children and running the home, and despite her obvious talent, she lacked the confidence to return to illustration. Her portfolio remained in the family attic for many years, but now her work is published here for the first time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print of Waterlow Park, Highgate, taken around 1950 by Shirley Markham showcases the serene beauty and timeless charm of this north London park. The image captures a moment in time as people leisurely sit on park benches, enjoying the tranquility and natural surroundings. Shirley Markham was an accomplished artist who studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London during the early 1950s. Her artistic style was influenced by renowned British illustrators such as Mervyn Peake, Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake, and Edward Bawden. She also drew inspiration from her travels to Italy's Dolomite Mountains and Rome, where she sketched classical buildings. Despite her promising career as a graphic designer producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus, and programs; societal expectations led Markham to give up her profession when she married in 1957. Middle-class women during that era were often expected to focus solely on raising children and managing household responsibilities. For many years after leaving her career behind, Markham's portfolio remained tucked away in the family attic until now. This collection offers a glimpse into her talent for illustration that had been hidden from public view for decades. With this publication marking its first appearance outside of the family circle since its creation over half a century ago; we can finally appreciate Shirley Markham's remarkable artwork and celebrate her contribution to the world of illustration.
