EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the upper story of Shakespeare's birthplace in Stratford-upon-Avon, captured in 1885 by the talented artist Edward Hull. The image is an engraving from Sidney L Lee's book "Stratford-on-Avon, from the Earliest Time to the Death of William Shakespeare" published in London that same year. The concept behind this illustration is to transport viewers into a moment frozen in time, allowing them to step into the empty room where one of history's greatest playwrights was born. The monochrome tones add a sense of nostalgia and reverence, emphasizing the historical significance of this place. As we gaze at this interior scene, we can almost imagine young William Shakespeare growing up within these walls, his creative spirit nurtured by his surroundings. The simplicity and authenticity conveyed through this print evoke a deep connection with England's rich literary heritage. Edward Hull skillfully captures every detail of this room, showcasing its architectural beauty while leaving space for our imagination to fill in the gaps. This print serves as a testament not only to Shakespeare's enduring legacy but also as a tribute to those who have contributed their talents throughout history to preserve and celebrate his life and works.
