EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Transfiguration of Jesus" an ancient Russian fresco dating back to approximately 1380. The artwork, found in the collection of the Transfiguration Church in Kovalyovo, Novgorod, is a testament to the rich artistic heritage and deep Christian roots of Russia. In this masterpiece, we witness the extraordinary moment when Jesus Christ reveals his divine glory on Mount Tabor. Painted with remarkable skill by artists from the renowned Novgorod school, every detail exudes reverence and spirituality. The central figure of Jesus stands radiant and transfigured, surrounded by his closest disciples - Peter, James the Great, and John. As they gaze upon their transformed master in awe and wonderment, two other significant figures appear beside him: Elijah the prophet and Moses from Old Testament lore. Through this profound depiction of biblical events, we are reminded of Christianity's core teachings about faith and redemption. The fresco captures both the human aspect of Christ's earthly ministry as well as his divinity shining through during this pivotal moment. With its vibrant colors and intricate brushwork that has stood the test of time for centuries, this piece represents not only a pinnacle achievement in old Russian art but also serves as a powerful symbol within Orthodox Church liturgy. It invites viewers to reflect on their own spiritual journey while marveling at the talent behind such exquisite religious imagery.
