EDITORS COMMENTS
"Sur L'Aisne: On the Front of Army Mangin; Preparation of Artillery for the Attack that Gave Us, on September 2, 1918, the Nord Cretes of the Valley of the Aisne, to the North of Soissons, and a Part of the Village of Bucy-le-Long, to the North-East of the City," is a poignant photograph capturing the intensity and gravity of the Battle of Soissons during the First World War. The image, created by an unknown photographer, is taken from "L'Album de la Guerre 1914-1919, Volume 2" published by L'Illustration, Paris, in 1924. The photograph depicts soldiers of the French army meticulously preparing their artillery for an impending attack on the German lines along the Aisne River in Picardy, France. The soldiers, focused and determined, are seen loading ammunition and checking their weapons, while others are busy adjusting the sights and fuses of their guns. The scene is set against the backdrop of a barren and desolate battlefield, with the remnants of destroyed buildings and trees in the distance, serving as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of war. The Battle of Soissons was a significant engagement during the final months of the First World War, as the German Spring Offensive had pushed the Allied forces back, threatening to split their lines and potentially alter the course of the war. However, the French and American forces, under the command of General Mangin, managed to mount a successful counter-attack, resulting in the recapture of key territories and a significant morale boost for the Allied forces. This powerful photograph encapsulates the bravery and resilience of the soldiers on the front lines, as they prepared to face the enemy in a battle that would ultimately turn the tide of the war in favor of the Allies. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the soldiers during the First World War and the importance of their efforts in shaping the course of history.
