EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent Shire Horse stallion Harold, taken around 1905 by the talented artist Frank Babbage. Known for his exceptional lineage, Harold's descendants reigned supreme in the studbook, and all post-World War Two Shire Horses can trace their ancestry back to him. Alfred C Duncombe of Calwich Abbey, Derbyshire was fortunate enough to own this majestic creature. The image is a testament to the grandeur and power of these gentle giants that once roamed the English countryside. Set against a picturesque backdrop of lush green fields, Harold stands tall with an air of regality. His muscular frame and noble demeanor epitomize the essence of British heritage. This photograph comes from "Live Stock in Health and Disease" edited by Professor J Prince-Sheldon, published by The Waverley Book Co. Ltd in London around 1890. It serves as a reminder of our deep connection with animals and their significant role in shaping our history. Frank Babbage's masterful portrait captures every intricate detail - from Harold's glossy coat to his expressive eyes filled with wisdom. This print transports us back to a time when draught horses like Harold were essential for agricultural work on farmlands across Britain. As we admire this remarkable piece of artistry, let us appreciate not only its aesthetic beauty but also its historical significance as it pays homage to one extraordinary stallion who left an indelible mark on the Shire Horse breed.
