EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph, titled "Seeing off Tsesarevich Nicholas Alexandrovich from the city of Kansk," was captured by Russian photographer AM Zlobkov in 1891. The image is part of a collection of over four hundred photographs documenting daily life in Yenisei Province during the late Tsarist period. The scene captures a grand and formal departure of Tsesarevich Nicholas Alexandrovich, the heir to the Russian throne, from the city of Kansk in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Siberia. The Tsesarevich, dressed in a dark suit and overcoat, stands in the doorway of a grand building, surrounded by a group of men in various stages of bidding him farewell. Some men wear traditional Cossack attire, while others are dressed in more formal clothing. The photograph captures the sense of anticipation and excitement in the air as the Tsesarevich prepares to leave. Flags fly high from the buildings, and banners bearing the Romanov crest flutter in the wind. The men in the photograph, a mix of peasants, Cossacks, and high-ranking officials, all turn their gaze towards the departing Tsesarevich, a testament to the significance of the moment. The photograph offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of grandeur and tradition in Russian history. The image is a valuable historical record of the Meeting of Frontiers, a term used to describe the Russian expansion into Siberia and the Far East. This photograph, along with the rest of AM Zlobkov's collection, is now preserved in the Library of Congress, a testament to the rich heritage and history of Russia.
