EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Rue des Grands Carmes, Vue prise de la Rue Ste. Marthe, 1862" transports us back to the charming streets of Marseilles in the 19th century. Taken by Albert Terris as part of his album "Renovation de la Vieille Ville de Marseille: ouverture de la rue Imperiale" this albumen print captures a moment frozen in time. The image showcases a picturesque cobblestone street lined with historic buildings that exude an old-world charm. The cobbled road winds its way up a gentle hill, leading our eyes towards the distant horizon. A solitary street lamp stands tall amidst the architectural beauty, casting a warm glow on its surroundings. Terris's mastery lies in his ability to capture not just the physical aspects of this scene but also its ambiance and character. The play between light and shadow adds depth to each building facade while highlighting their unique architectural details. As we gaze upon this photograph, we are transported into another era—a time when gas lamps illuminated these streets at night and horse-drawn carriages echoed through their narrow passages. It serves as a reminder of how cities evolve over time while still preserving glimpses of their rich heritage. Albert Terris has immortalized this corner of Marseilles with his lens, allowing us to appreciate both its historical significance and artistic beauty for generations to come.
