EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, titled "Prize Pigeons at the recent show of the Halifax Fancy Pigeon Association, 1862," is an engraving from a sketch by H. Crossley, published in the Illustrated London News. The photograph showcases some of the most distinguished pigeons that obtained first prizes in their respective classes at the Halifax Fancy Pigeon Association show during that year. The image features an impressive lineup of prize-winning pigeons, with Mr. Eden's Salford pouter taking center stage, towering over the rest of the group. The other pigeons are arranged in order from left to right, beginning with Mr. Eden's almond tumblers from Salford, followed by Mr. Sephton's bald common tumbler from Prescot. The lineup continues with Mr. Shaw's trumpeter from Stainland, Mr. Else's short-faced tumbler - mottle from London, Mr. Archer's short-faced tumbler - kite from London, Mr. Hives's short-faced tumbler - beard from Nottingham, Mr. Stevens's carrier from Axminster, Mr. Taylor's fantail from Sheffield, and finally, Mr. Parker's turbit from Chorley. The intricately detailed engraving, created by Harrison Weir, captures the unique beauty and character of each pigeon, showcasing their distinctive features and plumage. The image offers a glimpse into the world of 19th-century pigeon breeding and the competitive spirit that drove enthusiasts to display their prized birds at agricultural shows. This print is a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of the time and a reminder of the unusual hobby that once captivated the British public.
