EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "The New Jerusalem, c1900" takes us back to a significant moment in history. The image portrays Christ, the savior of the world through his Crucifixion, standing at the entrance of The New Jerusalem. As he awaits the arrival of those who have been saved by embracing his message and sacrifice, a crowd gathers around him. In stark contrast, we witness another group descending towards hell; individuals who have chosen to ignore Christ's teachings. This powerful depiction serves as a reminder of the consequences that await those who turn away from redemption. The composition is filled with symbolism and emotion. A sense of tragedy and desperation can be felt among those outside The New Jerusalem's gates, while Christ stands tall as a symbol of hope and salvation. Women and men alike are seen walking towards their final judgment. The chromolithograph technique used in this illustration adds depth and vibrancy to every detail - from the geographical features surrounding The New Jerusalem to the crucifixion scene depicted on a distant hill. This thought-provoking piece invites contemplation about life's choices and our own spiritual journeys. It serves as an inspiration for devotion, guiding us towards making decisions that align with our beliefs. Created in the 20th century but reminiscent of 19th-century religious artistry, this print captures both historical significance and timeless themes related to faith, reward, punishment, vulnerability, sacrifice, and salvation.
