The Meet at Mr. Muleygrubs, 1854
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating snapshot of a lively scene captured by the talented artist John Leech. This intricate etching takes us back to the enchanting world of Handley Cross; or, Mr. Jorrockss Hunt, a novel written by Robert Smith Surtees in 1854. Within the cozy confines of an elegant dining room from the 19th century, we witness a chaotic gathering that exudes both excitement and dismay. Men dressed in vibrant red hunting attire engage in animated conversation while their faithful foxhounds eagerly await their next adventure. A plump gentleman with an expression of surprise stands out amidst this bustling crowd. Intriguingly, it is not just humans who populate this intriguing composition - two mischievous children and an adorable dog add charm to the tableau. The room itself is adorned with exquisite furniture and literature strewn across a table, hinting at refined tastes and intellectual pursuits. This print transports us into another era where fox hunting was not only a popular sport but also served as inspiration for fictional characters like Mr. Muleygrubs himself. Through Leech's masterful brushstrokes, we are reminded of the rich tapestry woven by Surtees' literary genius. "The Meet at Mr. Muleygrubs" invites us to immerse ourselves in history and appreciate both artistry and storytelling intertwined within its frame. It serves as a testament to the enduring allure of centuries past
