EDITORS COMMENTS
This colorized print captures the historic Globe Theatre and the Bear Garden in Bankside, Southwark during the late 16th century. The Globe Theatre, prominently featured on the right side of the image, was a renowned venue associated with performances of William Shakespeare's plays. Opened in 1599, it served as a hub for theatrical entertainment during Elizabethan times. Adjacent to the Globe stands the Bear Garden, depicted in this engraving from 1825. This site held an entirely different form of entertainment - bear-baiting. A popular blood sport of that era, bear-baiting involved dogs being set upon bears for public amusement. The juxtaposition of these two buildings within one image showcases contrasting forms of entertainment prevalent during this period. While Shakespeare's plays captivated audiences with their poetic brilliance at the Globe Theatre, nearby spectators gathered at the Bear Garden to witness brutal displays of animal cruelty. This fascinating snapshot provides a glimpse into London's rich cultural history and serves as a reminder that our understanding and appreciation for art and entertainment have evolved significantly over time. It is through such visual relics that we can reflect upon our past while acknowledging how far we have come as a society in terms of compassion and ethical treatment towards both humans and animals alike.
