EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a poignant moment in the aftermath of the First World War. The image, titled 'Les chefs d'etat Allies a Paris; La reine Elisabeth sortant de Saint-Gervais, l'eglise parisienne atteinte, le jour du Vendredi-Saint, par un obus allemand' (The Allied Heads of State in Paris: Queen Elisabeth Leaving Saint-Gervais Church, Struck by a German Shell on Good Friday, 1918), was published in the French magazine L'Illustration in 1924. The photograph depicts Queen Elisabeth of Belgium, nee Duchess Elisabeth Gabrielle Valerie Marie of Bavaria, making her way down the steps of Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais Church in Paris. Accompanied by a man, believed to be a member of her entourage, the Queen appears determined and resilient despite the destruction and chaos surrounding her. The church, a symbol of peace and spiritual refuge, lies in ruins, its doors battered and its facade pockmarked by shrapnel. The photograph is a testament to the indomitable spirit of the Allied leaders and the people of Paris during the tumultuous years of the First World War. The image of the Queen, dressed in mourning attire, leaving the church on Good Friday, underscores the somber mood of the post-war period and the long road to recovery and reconciliation. The photograph's creator remains unknown, adding to its mystique and historical significance. Today, it serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made during the war and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
