EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Kintai Bridge in Iwakuni, Japan during the early 20th century. Designed by a Japanese architect, this magnificent wooden bridge gracefully spans across the Nishiki River in Suo. With a total length of 750 feet and towering 78 feet above water, it is an impressive feat of civil engineering. Constructed for the first time in 1673, this architectural masterpiece consisted of five wooden arches that harmoniously blended with its natural surroundings. However, tragedy struck when a devastating typhoon destroyed the bridge in 1950. Nevertheless, displaying resilience and determination, it was rebuilt just three years later to its former glory. The image captures not only the structural beauty of this seventeenth-century marvel but also provides insight into life during that era. People can be seen crossing the bridge as they go about their daily lives against the backdrop of serene river waters and lush greenery. This photograph serves as a testament to Japan's rich history and cultural heritage. It reminds us of the enduring spirit that drives communities to rebuild even after facing adversity. The Kintai Bridge stands as an everlasting symbol of strength and unity within this enchanting country's landscape.
