Kalmyk Woman, Kalmykia, Russia, 1862
EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is a window into the past, showcasing the traditional attire of a Kalmyk woman, captured by the skilled lens of Karlis Huns in 1862. The photograph is part of the ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia, a two-volume work published in Saint Petersburg to commemorate the millennium of the Russian Empire. The Kalmyks are a Mongolian people who have inhabited the northern Caucasus region of Russia since the late 17th century. This photograph is taken from Sheet 52 of Volume 1, which consists of 62 colored illustrations depicting various ethnic groups across the Russian Empire. The volume also includes a fold-out table and a colored-coded ethnographic map, providing valuable information about the size of the populations and their geographical distribution. The Kalmyk woman in the photograph is dressed in traditional garments, which include a long, flowing robe, a headdress adorned with intricate beadwork, and a scarf draped around her neck. Her appearance reflects the rich cultural heritage of the Kalmyk people, who have been influenced by both Mongolian and Russian traditions. This photograph is a testament to the ethnographic work of Gustav-Fedor Pauli, a German ethnographer who immigrated to Russia and dedicated his career to documenting the diverse ethnic groups of the empire. The two-volume work, titled "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie," was published in French and provides detailed essays about the history, culture, language, and other aspects of each ethnic group. This photograph and the accompanying text offer a glimpse into the lives of the Kalmyks and other ethnic groups in the Russian Empire during the mid-19th century.
