EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite artwork of Nishimura Shigenaga, a prominent artist from the 18th century. Titled "Jurojin with crane and tortoise" this masterpiece is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of Japan during the Edo period. The image depicts an elderly man, believed to be Jurojin, a deity associated with longevity and good fortune in Japanese folklore. With his long flowing beard and walking staff, he exudes wisdom and serenity as he strolls through a picturesque landscape. Accompanying him are two symbolic creatures - a graceful crane and a wise tortoise. In Japanese culture, cranes represent longevity while tortoises symbolize immortality.
