Smythe's distinguished career spanned various fields, making him a trailblazer for his community during the 19th century. He served as the United States Ambassador to Liberia, representing American interests in the African country that was established as a settlement for free African Americans. Prior to his diplomatic role, Smythe made significant strides in education. He was a dedicated teacher and principal, shaping the minds of future generations. His commitment to equal rights and human rights was evident in his professional pursuits. The photograph, taken in New York City, showcases Smythe's distinguished appearance, complete with a well-groomed mustache. At the time, this image would have been published in "Men of Mark: Eminent, Progressive and Rising," a significant compilation of portraits and biographies of notable African Americans, edited by William J. Simmons. Today, this photograph is part of the vast collection at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, a division of the New York Public Library.
