EDITORS COMMENTS
Theodore Chasseriau's captivating etching, "Honest Iago, my Desdemona must I leave to thee: plate 4 from Othello" transports us to the dramatic world of Shakespeare's tragic play. This print, originally etched in 1844 and reprinted in 1900, captures a pivotal moment from Act 1, Scene 3. In this intense scene, we witness the anguish of Othello as he confronts his trusted advisor Iago about his wife Desdemona. The composition skillfully portrays the emotional turmoil within these characters through their expressive faces and body language. The artist's mastery is evident in every stroke of the roulette and drypoint on chine coll technique used to create this piece. Chasseriau's attention to detail brings depth to each character portrayed - from Othello with his noble stature and troubled gaze, to Iago with his cunning expression that hides deceitful intentions. The monochromatic palette adds an air of timelessness while emphasizing the intensity of the unfolding drama. Displayed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, this artwork stands as a testament to Chasseriau's talent for capturing human emotions within a historical context. It serves as a reminder of Shakespeare's enduring legacy and continues to captivate viewers with its powerful portrayal of love, betrayal, jealousy, and tragedy. This print not only showcases Chasseriau's artistic prowess but also invites us into the complex world created by William Shakespeare centuries
