EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a group of Danakil men and women from the Italian port, Assab Bay in Eritrea, dating back to 1912. The image is taken from "The Living Races of Mankind, Vol. II" published by Hutchinson & Co in London during the early 20th century. In this striking portrait, we see a diverse gathering representing the rich cultural heritage of Africa. Seated gracefully on the ground, these individuals are adorned in traditional robes and dresses that reflect their ethnic identity and signify their connection to their homeland. Each person exudes strength and pride as they hold various weapons such as spears, symbolizing both protection and warfare. The photo not only showcases the beauty of African people but also provides insight into Ethiopia's historical context at that time. It serves as a reminder of the resilience and unity within communities during an era marked by colonial influences. Preserved through monochrome tones, this ethereal snapshot allows us to appreciate the intricate details while contemplating the stories behind each face captured within its frame.
