EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases General George Gordon Meade, a prominent Union general during the American Civil War. The image, believed to be taken around 1880, portrays Meade in his military uniform and exudes an air of authority and determination. Meade played a crucial role in several significant battles of the war. He fought valiantly for the Union states at Bull Run and Antietam before being promoted to major-general of volunteers. His leadership skills were put to the test at Fredericksburg and Chancellorville, where he led troops with unwavering courage. In 1863, Meade was entrusted with commanding the Army of the Potomac. It was under his strategic guidance that he achieved one of his most notable victories - defeating General Robert E Lee at Gettysburg. However, despite this triumph, Meade faced criticism for not fully capitalizing on his advantage. The black-and-white engraving captures every detail of Meade's distinguished appearance - from his well-groomed beard to his dignified dress attire. This portrait serves as a testament to both his military prowess and dedication towards preserving unity within America during a time of great turmoil. Preserved in Cassells History of the United States by Edmund Ollier, this print offers us a glimpse into one man's pivotal role in shaping history. As we reflect upon this image today, it reminds us of the sacrifices made by countless individuals like General George Gordon Meade who fought bravely for their country during one of its darkest periods.
