EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The gentleman Paris" an engraving of the incunable Paris and Viana. Printed in Barcelona in 1494 by Diego Gumiel, this edition holds a significant place in Catalan literature as it features a novel written in Catalan during the late 14th century or early 15th century. The image transports us back to the chivalric romance era of the 14th and 15th centuries, where noble knights donned civilian clothes while upholding their code of chivalry. Located within the Library of Catalonia, this remarkable piece represents a crucial part of medieval literature from Catalonia, Spain. The illustration depicts a French Breton knight named Cypede Pierre, who plays a prominent role in "The Tragedy of Lancelot". This translation from Provencal language captures the essence of bravery and honor that prevailed during those times. As we admire this vertical print, we are reminded of Catalonia's rich cultural heritage and its connection to the Crown of Aragon. The Iberian Peninsula witnessed countless tales like these unfold throughout history. Santiago Ortega's meticulous work on this engraving beautifully brings forth every detail with precision. Let us cherish this extraordinary glimpse into our past—a testament to both literary excellence and artistic craftsmanship—preserved for generations to come at one of Spain's most esteemed libraries.
