EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning fashion plate, created by renowned English publisher and printmaker Rudolph Ackermann in 1818, showcases the elegant morning dress of the Regency era. The image, now held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), captures the essence of British fashion during the early 19th century. The fashion plate depicts a graceful woman dressed in an empire line morning gown, which was a popular style during the Regency era. The dress features a high waistline, a full skirt, and a long, flowing pelisse, or robe, which was worn over the gown as an outer layer. The gown itself is adorned with intricate floral patterns, adding a touch of color and elegance to the ensemble. The fashion plate is a hand-colored engraving on paper, with each detail meticulously etched and then carefully colored by hand. The result is a vivid and lifelike representation of the fashionable attire of the time. The woman in the image exudes confidence and sophistication, reflecting the refined taste and elegance of the Regency era. The Regency era, which spanned from 1811 to 1820, was marked by a shift towards simpler, more comfortable clothing. Morning dresses, such as the one depicted in this fashion plate, were worn for daytime activities and were designed to be less formal than evening wear. The empire line, which accentuated the natural waistline and created a sleek, elongated silhouette, was a hallmark of the Regency era and can be seen in numerous fashion plates and portraits from the time. This fashion plate by Rudolph Ackermann is a testament to the rich fashion history of Britain during the 1810s and serves as an important reminder of the enduring influence of the Regency era on fashion and design.
