EDITORS COMMENTS
Francesco Fontebasso's 'Death of Saint Jerome' is an evocative and poignant 18th century drawing that captures the moment of the saint's passing. The Italian artist masterfully employs pen and brown ink, brush, and brown wash on prepared laid paper to create a powerful and moving depiction of the scene. Saint Jerome, depicted as an aged man with a gaunt face and weary expression, lies on his deathbed surrounded by a group of angels and cherubs. The cherubs, with their chubby bodies and innocent faces, offer comfort and support to the dying saint. A lion, the symbol of Saint Jerome's strength and courage, lies at his feet, a reminder of his hermit's life in the desert. The drawing is rich in symbolism and emotion. The angels, with their serene expressions and outstretched hands, represent the peace and comfort that comes with the acceptance of death. The brown ink and wash technique adds depth and texture to the image, creating a sense of timelessness and authenticity. Francesco Fontebasso's 'Death of Saint Jerome' is a beautiful and moving work of art that speaks to the human experience of mortality and the comfort that faith can provide. This drawing is a testament to the artistic heritage of Italy and the enduring power of religious art. Originally created in the 18th century, this drawing is now part of the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. and is a must-see for anyone interested in the history of art and the depiction of religious themes in European art.
