Bucks Beauty and Rowlandsons Connoisseur, January 1,1800
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that offers a glimpse into the satirical world of Georgian Britain. Created by Piercy Roberts in the 19th century, this engraving showcases his mastery in capturing both the essence of fashion and social commentary. In this artwork, we witness a scene where a male figure donning a frock coat and an eye glass represents Rowlandson's Connoisseur. With an air of lechery about him, he ogles at Bucks Beauty - an elegantly dressed woman who becomes the subject of his lascivious gaze. The use of caricature and cartoon-like elements adds to the satirical nature of this piece. Roberts skillfully employs color and detail to highlight not only the characters but also their clothing choices. The intricate engravings bring out every fold and texture, giving life to their attire while providing insight into Georgian fashion trends. The inclusion of a magnifying glass held by Rowlandson's Connoisseur further emphasizes his role as an observer with questionable intentions. It serves as a metaphor for scrutinizing society through distorted lenses. This print is now part of museum collections such as The Met, preserving its historical significance as both art form and social critique. Through "Bucks Beauty and Rowlandsons Connoisseur". Piercy Roberts invites us to reflect on issues surrounding gender dynamics, objectification, and societal norms prevalent during that era – themes that continue to resonate
