EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Benediction Cross, a remarkable artifact from the 13th to 15th century Byzantine period. Created by an unknown artist, this cross is adorned with intricate designs and holds immense historical significance. The front of the cross features a striking image of Christ Pantokrator, symbolizing his role as the Ruler of the World. His majestic presence exudes power and divinity, capturing the essence of Byzantine religious art. On the back of this exquisite cross, we find another enchanting depiction - that of the Virgin Orans, or Virgin Praying. This portrayal highlights her devotion and spirituality as she fervently communicates with God through prayer. The combination of these two iconic figures on one object makes it truly extraordinary. Crafted from black schist and embellished with gold and silver accents, this Benediction Cross exemplifies glyptic art at its finest. Its meticulous craftsmanship reflects both skillful technique and deep reverence for religious symbolism. Now housed in The Cleveland Museum of Art, this piece stands as a testament to Byzantium's rich cultural heritage. Although its creator remains unknown to us today, their artistic legacy lives on through this magnificent work. Heritage Art/Heritage Images has masterfully captured every detail in this print – allowing viewers to appreciate not only its beauty but also its historical significance.
