EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled "Air" and created by Jean Daullé in 1748, transports us to the enchanting world of 18th-century France. Inspired by Francois Boucher's original artwork, this exquisite piece captures the essence of air through a delightful composition filled with angelic cherubs and playful children. In this circular scene, we witness three winged cherubs gracefully floating amidst a dreamy landscape. The ethereal atmosphere is enhanced by the presence of birds soaring freely above them. These cherubim embody the concept of air, symbolizing its intangible nature and boundless freedom. Daullé's masterful engraving technique brings every intricate detail to life, showcasing his skill as an artist during the Rococo period. The nakedness of these cherubic figures represents their innocence and purity while adding an element of vulnerability to their playful demeanor. Displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, this print serves as a testament to French heritage artistry. It invites viewers to reflect on the beauty and significance of each natural element that surrounds us daily. As we gaze upon this remarkable work, we are reminded that even in our modern lives filled with technology and progress, there is still magic in embracing nature's wonders – just like these charming cherubs who find joy in playing within the realm of air itself.
