Painted in 1743 by Nicolas Lancret, the image depicts an intense moment where nuns take swift action against a man caught spying on them with binoculars. The composition is filled with tension as the nuns, dressed in their traditional habits, unleash their fury upon the unsuspecting voyeur. Their faces reveal determination and indignation while brandishing whips to deliver punishment for his invasion of privacy. The man's expression betrays both surprise and regret as he realizes the consequences of his actions. Lancret's masterful brushstrokes bring life to each character, capturing not only their physical features but also conveying emotions through subtle details. The mid-18th-century setting adds an air of intrigue and mystique to the scene, transporting viewers back in time.
